Every year we gather in Grant Notley Park at the Broken Families Monument to honour those who have lost their lives as a result of their jobs in the preceding year. This year our theme is Invisible Injuries – Not Part of the Job where we will discuss the broad and long reaching impacts of psychological safety and the lack of supports in jobs that are getting increasingly dangerous for the mental health of workers.
This past year saw 202 workers die as a result of their job which is approximately 25% more than last year. The fact that this number isn’t coming down but is increasing staggeringly shows that employers aren’t particularly concerned with ensuring worker safety. There are many laws in place that should ensure worker safety but we are not seeing the incident rates drop like we were promised. We must defend our rights and call on the courts to enforce the law and force employers to do what they should have been doing all along, ensuring workers safety.
